2008-09 Skyline Conference Swimming Championship Results
PURCHASE, N.Y. - Senior Kimberly Garrett won two individual events and earned a second-place finish in leading Purchase College to the Skyline Conference Women's Swimming Championship title. The Skyline title was the first for Purchase in any sport.
Garrett's victories in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events were the only individual victories for Purchase. But the Panthers, who also opened the meet by capturing the 200-yard medley relay, used their superior depth to easily capture the team title. Purchase recorded 132 team points, earning a convincing victory over St. Joseph's (84). Mount Saint Mary (59) finished third, followed by Maritime (32), Mount Saint Vincent (31) and Old Westbury (13).
St. Joseph's junior Nicole Hatzispirou and Mount Saint Mary junior Annie Parodi shared Skyline Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year honors after winning three individual events each. Hatzispirou won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a meet-record time of 12:41.65 and also captured the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle events. Parodi, who also earned Swimmer of the Year honors as a sophomore, won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events along with the 100-yard butterfly.
Purchase College sophomore Kaitlyn Raitz and College of Mount Saint Vincent freshman Amanda Costa shared Rookie of the Year honors. Raitz finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, and second in the 200-yard individual medley. Costa took third in the 100-yard breaststroke, third in the 100-yard freestyle, and second in the 500-yard freestyle.
Purchase College head coach Peter Nestel was selected as the Skyline Conference Coach of the Year in Women's Swimming after leading the Panthers to a 9-1 regular-season record (5-0 Skyline) and the conference championship title. The Panthers also received the Team Sportsmanship Award for outstanding sportsmanship in women's swimming throughout the season.
