CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - For the second straight season, Farmingdale State College senior guard Kimberly Blakney was selected as the Skyline Conference Player of the Year in women's basketball. Blakney, the NCAA Division III leader in scoring and steals, led the Rams to their first-ever Skyline women's basketball title. SUNY Old Westbury freshman guard Krystina Agard received Rookie of the Year accolades while Farmingdale State head coach Chris Mooney and Mount Saint Mary head coach Randy Ognibene shared Coach of the Year honors.
Blakney actually improved upon her numbers from last season as she enters NCAA Tournament play with averages of 25.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 6.1 steals and 2.1 blocks per game. The senior, a seven-time selection as Skyline Player of the Week, became the first Farmingdale State women’s basketball player to eclipse the 2,000-point mark for her career. She currently has 2,067 points entering postseason play.
One of the top scoring freshmen in the nation, SUNY College at Old Westbury freshman Krystina Agard was selected as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year. Agard ranked second in the conference and sixth in the nation in scoring at 23.2 points per game. She also averaged 5.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.8 steals and 1.4 blocks while shooting 86.0 percent from the free throw line. Agard, a 10-time Rookie of the Week selection, ranked second in the conference in scoring, second in assists, second in free throw percentage and third in steals. She is also the first freshman in six years to be selected to the All-Skyline first team.
Farmingdale State senior Kimberly Blakney was also selected as the Most Valuable Player of the Skyline women’s basketball championship. In two conference tournament games, Blakney averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.0 steals. In the Rams’ semifinal win over Purchase, she scored 27 points including 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range, and also had 11 steals and six rebounds. In Farmingdale’s championship game victory over Mount Saint Mary, Blakney scored a game-high 16 points while adding seven rebounds and four blocked shots as the Rams won their first Skyline Conference title.
After tying for first place in the regular-season standings and both earning NCAA Tournament bids, it is only fitting that Farmingdale State’s Chris Mooney and Mount Saint Mary’s Randy Ognibene share Coach of the Year honors. Mooney directed the Rams to their finest season in school history, going 25-1 en route to the first Skyline title in program history. Farmingdale opened the season by winning 23 straight games before falling to Mount Saint Mary. The Blue Knights lost two starters, including their leading scorer from the previous season, but Ognibene directed a team with just one double-digit scorer to an 11th straight NCAA Tournament bit.
Yeshiva University received the Skyline Conference Team Sportsmanship Award in women's basketball after displaying outstanding sportsmanship throughout the 2009-10 season.
