Farmingdale, N.Y. - In just its fourth season as a varsity program, the Farmingdale State men's tennis team (12-2) defeated Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon, 5-2, in the finals of the 2011 Skyline Conference Championship to win their first league title in program history. With the win, they claimed the conference's automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament.
The Rams started the day winning 2-of-3 doubles matches for the 2-1 lead going into singles play. Freshman and Tournament MVP Christian Bormann paired with senior Joe Passarella in a 9-7 win over the Knights' top doubles team of Greg Jacob and Stat Willard. At third doubles, senior Chris Genzmann and freshman Joseph Falcetta grabbed an 8-4 victory.
In singles play, Bormann defeated top singles player Mike McNicholas by a score of 6-4, 6-1, for the Rams' third point of the day, leaving just two more wins needed in the five matches remaining to win the Championship.
Sophomore Alex Bessarabov won the fourth match for the Rams, at third singles, defeating Willard 6-1, 6-2, for a 4-1 Rams lead. The fifth point came from Genzmann at sixth singles, as he defeated Zach Conlon 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) to secure his team's first-ever Skyline Championship.
The Rams will now await word of their opponent and site for the NCAA First Round match.
